3D traffic situation for question 1

1. You are driving on the motorway behind two lorries that are following each other closely and you want to overtake both. Keeping right is the rule. After the first lorry, may you stay in the left lane until you have also passed the second one, instead of briefly going back to the right in between?

Explanation: Yes. You must keep right as much as possible (art. 3(1) RVV), but not more than is reasonably possible: you cannot safely return into the small gap between two lorries without losing your following distance (art. 19, art. 5 WVW). You complete the overtaking of both lorries briskly and then move straight back to the right.NL: Ja Source: RVV 1990 art. 3 lid 1; art. 19; WVW 1994 art. 5
3D traffic situation for question 2

2. You are nearing the end of the acceleration lane and want to join the motorway. What is the correct way to merge?

Explanation: When merging you match your speed to the through traffic and slot into a gap; you have no priority and must give way to the other traffic.NL: Je snelheid aanpassen aan het verkeer op de snelweg en invoegen in een geschikt gat Source: RVV 1990 art. 54 (bijzondere manoeuvre: invoegen) en art. 55
3D traffic situation for question 3

3. You are driving on a quiet three-lane motorway and keep driving in the middle lane without any reason. What is correct?

Explanation: You keep as far right as possible and return to the right after overtaking; staying in a middle or left lane without reason is not allowed.NL: Dit mag niet; je moet zoveel mogelijk rechts houden Source: RVV 1990 art. 3 (rechts houden)

4. You are stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway and notice the right lane moves faster than the left. What are you allowed to do?

Explanation: Passing on the right is forbidden, but in a traffic jam the lanes may move independently and the right lane may go faster than the left.NL: In de file mag rechts sneller rijden dan links; je hoeft niet van strook te wisselen Source: RVV 1990 art. 11 (inhalen)
3D traffic situation for question 5

5. You want to leave the motorway via the deceleration lane. Where do you only slow down to a lower speed?

Explanation: You keep your speed until you are on the deceleration lane and only brake there; braking on the main carriageway endangers the traffic behind you.NL: Pas op de uitrijstrook zelf, nadat je de doorgaande rijbaan hebt verlaten Source: RVV 1990 art. 54 (uitrijstrook oprijden) en art. 55
Road sign G1

6. Around midday you are driving here with no additional speed sign posted. How fast may you drive your passenger car?

Explanation: Since March 2020 a nationwide daytime limit (06:00-19:00) of 100 km/h applies on the motorway, unless a sign shows a different speed.NL: 100 km/h Source: Bord G1 (autosnelweg) / RVV 1990 art. 21
3D traffic situation for question 7

7. On the motorway you have just driven past your exit. What must you do?

Explanation: Turning around and reversing are prohibited on the motorway and expressway; you simply drive on to the next exit.NL: Doorrijden naar de volgende afrit Source: RVV 1990 art. 43 (verboden manoeuvres op autosnelweg/autoweg)
3D traffic situation for question 8

8. You have overtaken a slower car on the left on the motorway. What do you do next?

Explanation: After overtaking you return to the right as soon as it is safe without cutting off the overtaken car; the left lane is only for overtaking.NL: Zodra het veilig kan, keer je op tijd terug naar de rechterrijstrook Source: RVV 1990 art. 11 (inhalen) / art. 3 (rechts houden)
3D traffic situation for question 9

9. May you enter the motorway with a moped-car or a vehicle that cannot go faster than 50 km/h?

Explanation: Only motor vehicles that can and may drive faster than 60 km/h are allowed on a motorway; on an expressway the threshold is 50 km/h. A vehicle limited to 50 km/h therefore may not enter the motorway.NL: Nee Source: RVV 1990 art. 42
3D traffic situation for question 10

10. You accidentally pass an exit on the motorway. May you reverse along the emergency lane back to the exit?

Show in Dutch

Explanation: Turning and reversing on a motorway (and expressway) is strictly forbidden and very dangerous. You continue to the next exit and turn around there.NL: Nee Source: RVV 1990 art. 43 — keren/achteruitrijden

Memory hooks for this topic

The emergency (hard) shoulder is only for emergencies: a breakdown or an accident. You may not drive on it, overtake on it, or stop there to wait or make a call.

Picture the hard shoulder as a hospital corridor: reserved for the ambulance and the broken-down car, never a shortcut for the impatient.

On the motorway (autosnelweg) only motor vehicles able by construction to go faster than 60 km/h are allowed. On the expressway (autoweg) the limit is faster than 50 km/h.

The longer word gets the bigger number: autoSNELweg (motorway) = 60, autoweg (expressway) = 50. Longer name, higher bar.

A red cross (X) on the matrix sign above a lane means that lane is closed. You may not drive under it and must leave that lane as soon as possible.

A red cross is like a wrong answer being struck out: that lane is 'crossed off', so switch out of it.

A green arrow pointing straight down on the matrix sign means: this lane is open. A flashing diagonal arrow means: leave this lane and move to the indicated side.

Green arrow = a green light to carry on; the flashing diagonal arrow gently 'pushes' you toward the side it points to.
